There have been several TV shows and movie dedicated to doing bucket lists, but a new program debuting on the Science Channel is An Idiot Abroad 2 - The Bucket List. The show chronicles reluctant traveler, Karl Pilkington, through a series of bucket list activities. The twist is that his colleagues, Ricky and Stephen, are in control. Standard bucket list items like Bungee jumping turn into something unexpected. In the first episode, Karl chickens out in doing the typical Bungee jump off of a bridge in New Zealand, only to find that his friends have thrown in a twist to challenge him to dive from a rickety tower made by a local tribe. It's ten times more scary than the original jump he avoided.

The show is both entertaining and funny. Turns out that Karl and his overseers are comedians in the UK. The show airs weekly and we'll see what other bucket list items become tortuous and harrowing experiences.

What I like the best is their monthly email newsletter, which acts like a friendly reminder to update their lists and keep Reaper List top of mind. Each newsletter highlights a list of the month, and in true social fashion, invites subscribers to nominate one of their favorite lists.

The idea of creating a Bucket List - the things to do before you die - is something that delights just about everyone. But not always.

There are some people I've encountered who don't get it. They don't like the "structure" around defining a list of things to do before you die. And, interestingly, there's a movement called the "Anti-Bucket List" that is about creating a list of things you will never do before you die. An example: skydiving, or bungee jumping. Anything that involves hurling yourself through the sky. This something some will never do. Or, an anti-bucket list might include things that are just too trendy. Example: Hot Yoga.

I love the concept of an anti-bucket list. Why? Because, one way or another, it makes you think of your bucket list!

So it's an interesting question: what are the best bucket list songs of all time?

I can think of three songs that fit the bill.

Let's start with the classic U2 song, "Beautiful Day". Certainly the title is right, but the lyrics are what speak to a bucket list frame-of-mind:

See the world in green and blue, See China right in front of you.
See the canyons broken by cloud, See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out. See the Bedouin fires at night, See the oil fields at first light. And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth, After the flood all the colors came out.
It was a beautiful day, Don't let it get away
Beautiful day.

Makes me want to get up and start traveling, doesn't it? Another tune that comes to mind is the theme from Rent, called "Seasons of Love". It's a reminder that life is truly short:

Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes,
Five hundred twenty-five thousand
Moments so dear
Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes
How do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights
In cups of coffee
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife

An inspiring score, don't you think? Finally, a recent song captures the Things-to-do-before-you-die sentiment perfectly. It's "Live like we're dying" by Kris Allen, of American Idol fame.

Yeah, we gotta start
Looking at the hands of the time we've been given
If this is all we got and we gotta start thinking
If every second counts on a clock that's ticking
Gotta live like we're dying

So what are other "bucket list" songs that come to mind? The comments section awaits.

Is it just me or is the world talking a lot about Bucket Lists? On Twitter, I 'm alerted for anytime someone tweets using the term #bucketlist, and I literally get alerts multple times a day.

But I also see the Bucket List concept playing out in mainstream media as well. Of course, things got going with the 1999 book by Dave Freeman, "100 things to do before you die". Not sure if any of the items on the Bucket Quiz (started in 1997) was on his list. But things really accelerated with the 2007 movie release of "The Bucket List" starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. But elsewhere too. Anyone seen "The Buried Life" on MTV about four friends touring the country in search of 100 things to do before you die? Sound familar? I wonder if they ever took the Bucket Quiz?

And, when you do a search on Amazon.com, there are 183 results for "bucket list". Today there are many books and audio tapes on different philosophies and approaches to the Bucket List concept. My favorite: "How Full Is Your Bucket? For Kids".

I'm sure I've missed quite a few other examples. Care to share? The comments section awaits.

Just yesterday I came across a suggestion for the Bucket Quiz that I've never heard of before. Today, Ilona sent in a suggestion which was simply, "Go Zorbing." I have never heard of "Zorbing" so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Here's the link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zorbing

As I learned, Zorbing is the "recreation of rolling downhill in an orb, generally made of transparent plastic."

I had two thoughts after reading the definition. First, was: I have to do this!!! Second, was: is it really safe? As for the first thought, it seemed to originate in New Zealand and is practiced in Australia. I'm planning a trip there soon so perhaps I'll give it a try. As for the second, there was no information about safety, but the article did talk about the different padding inside the orb, so I think it's ok.

In any case, it was a fresh idea to add to the list of things to do before you die.

Of all of the "things to do before you die" suggestions in the Bucket Quiz, the one I get the most flack for is "Grow a beard and leave it for at least a month." I guess this shouldn't come as a surprise as this one item alienates half of the visitors to the quiz. Obviously this one "to do" idea reveals that I am male. But I still think it is a valid activity, even though it is not for everyone. If you are a guy, and don't know how to grow a beard, check out this site: http://beards.org/grow.php. It contains everything you want to know to get started.

But here's what I want to know: within all of the comments I've received I've never heard what a female version of "grow a beard" would be. Any ideas? The comments balloon awaits above.
